Staying connected

Professor Stephen Foster, member of CIES and Head of the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering at UNSW holds a strong international profile in his field of Research interest in SFRC (Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete) and UHPC (Ultra High performance Concrete).

Practical applications of his research include his membership of the team for the development of the 2010 fib Model Code that includes structural design for SFRC and chair of  the working party under the guidance of BD90-5 to review the potential of introducing SFRC into the Australian Bridge Standard.

Professor Foster’s research expertise is further reinforced via his invitations to attend and present at key international meetings. Recent such participation included:

• Key note speaker at the 12th International Conference on Concrete Engineering & Technology (CONCET 2014) “Concrete Innovations and its Advanced Development” Malaysia (August 2014). Stephen's presentation – “Steel Fibre Reinforced and Ultra-High Performance Concrete - From Research to Practice”

CONCET is a biennial international conference organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Malaya (UM), Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). CONCET aims to bring together engineers, construction practitioners, scientists and researchers to share their knowledge, expertise and experience in concrete engineering and technology. The conference also aims to provide a forum to discuss related research, methodologies, directions and other important issues of concrete engineering and technology.

• In addition, Stephen was an invited speaker at the FRC International Workshop - Fibre Reinforced Concrete: from Design to Structural Applications held at the Polytechnique Montreal, University of Montreal Campus in Canada (July 2014).

The aim of this workshop was to provide the State-of-the-Art status on recent worldwide developments that have been made in term of specifications and real applications of fibre reinforced concrete structures. Presentations of case studies covered structural design and the description of applications such as beams, elevated floors, tunnel linings, slabs, pavements, precast elements, bridges and other applications.
