Professor Brian Uy elected as Chairman of the Australia Regional Group of IABSE


The Australian Group of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) has elected Professor Brian Uy as its new Chair from January 1, 2015. Brian has served on the Permanent Committee of IABSE since 1 January 2011 and is a current member of the IABSE Working Group WG 9 ‘Construction History’ and a former member of Working Commission WC2 ‘Steel, Timber and Composite Structures’ from 2003-2011. Brian succeeds Leigh D. Appleyard, Principal Consultant at ACOR, Australia, who is a member of IABSE WG5 on ‘Bearings and Joints’. IABSE thanked Leigh Appleyard for his dedicated service in this position since 2010. IABSE also congratulated Brian Uy on his new role and looks very much forward to future cooperation.

IABSE is a fellowship of structural engineers operating on a worldwide basis, with interests of all types of structures, in all materials.  It acts to improve our knowledge and understanding of the performance of structures.  Its members represent structural engineers of all ages, employed in design, academe, construction, regulation and renewal; many of its members occupy senior roles based on a history of personal achievement.

IABSE was founded in 1929 and is based in Zurich, Switzerland.  It has over 3,900 members in 100 countries, counting 48 National groups worldwide. The Australia National Group has over 60 members with four Permanent Committee members, including Dr Geoff Taplin (AECOM), Mr Leigh Appleyard (ACOR, Australia), Professor Riadh Al-Mahaidi (Swinburne University) and Professor Brian Uy (UNSW).
