Professor Chongmin Song: Successful ARC Linkage Project involvement

ARC Linkage project success involvement:

Congratulations to Professor Chongmin Song for his ARC Linkage success announced in May 2020 in a project led by Professor Robert Melchers of the University of Newcastle.

Title: Ship response under corrosion, fatigue, and complex sea-state environments.
Professor Robert Melchers; Mr Damian McGuckin; Professor Martin Renilson; Professor Chongmin Song; Dr Seref Aksu

This project will improve our understanding of the gradual deterioration of ships and maritime structures subject to metal corrosion, fatigue, and extreme sea-state conditions. Increasingly such understanding is necessary for optimal asset management decisions. These include the potential economic, personnel and other risks involved for ship owners and operators, including the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The project will use numerical simulation. It will tackle the Fluid-Structure Interaction problem of ships in waves by integrating Finite Element structural response analysis with cutting-edge Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics methods. The outcomes will provide new insight into remaining asset life and for exploring optimal maintenance strategies.

About ARC Linkage:
The ARC Linkage Program promotes national and international research partnerships between researchers and business, industry, community organisations and other publicly funded research agencies. By supporting the development of partnerships, the ARC encourages the transfer of skills, knowledge, and ideas as a basis for securing commercial and other benefits of research.
