Congratulations to A/Prof Johnson Shen!

Associate Professor Johnson Xuesong ShenCongratulations to CIES engineering construction and management academic Dr Johnson Xuesong Shen for his so well-deserved promotion to Associate Professor!

Associate Professor Johnson Shen’s research interests lie in Autonomous Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Twins, Smart Sensing, Internet of Things, Mixed Reality, and their applications in the preparation, construction, operation, and maintenance of civil infrastructure and the built environment.

He is the founder and Director of the Autonomy and Intelligence in CONstruction laboratory (AICON) at CIES.

AICON’s research projects have included:

  • Real-Time 3D Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) Mapping with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) or Drones
  • AI-enabled Automated As-built Building Information Modelling (BIM)
  • Field Emissions and Fuel Consumption Modelling of Construction Equipment
  • Automated Machine Control and Guidance in Construction
  • Tunnel Boring Machine Tunnelling Methods and Trenchless Techniques for Urban Underground Infrastructure Construction

A/Prof Shen has extensive research experiences in Real-Time 3D Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) Mapping with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) or Drones; AI-enabled Automated As-built Building Information Modelling (BIM); Field Emissions and Fuel Consumption Modelling of Construction Equipment; Automated Machine Control and Guidance in Construction, as well as Tunnel Boring Machine Tunnelling Methods and Trenchless Techniques for Urban Underground Infrastructure Construction.

Shen is a Key Chief Investigator in the Australian Research Council (ARC) Industry Transformation Research Hub for Resilient and Intelligent Infrastructure Systems (RIIS), with a Key Industry Partner Linke & Linke Surveys.

He represents Australia on the Board of Directors of the prestigious International Association for Automation and Robotics in Construction (IAARC), and is their current Treasurer.
