At CIES our research investigates and challenges the design and maintenance of civil engineering infrastructure to ensure it is economically viable, performs effectively and, most of all, is safe. Our researchers’ ultimate aim is to enhance quality of life in a world of constant economic, environmental and cultural changes.
Innovations changing engineering for good
The Centre for Infrastructure Engineering and Safety is located in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, which makes it perfectly placed to draw from various scientific and engineering disciplines related to the design, evaluation, performance and retrofit of engineering infrastructure.
Our research in general is focused on the demands of new and existing structures that are imposed by society and by economics. We look at how new and advanced materials are used, we look at improving the materials themselves, we investigate new and better ways to measure the stresses that structures are under, and we challenge and unite creativity and scientific rigour to ensure our research outcomes are world-class.
