Excellence Award 2017

Excellence Award 2017 – Concrete Institute of Australia:

Text books - “Design of prestressed concrete to AS3600-2009” and “Design of prestressed concrete to Eurocode 2

Two recent text books co – authored by CIES Deputy Director Professor Ian Gilbert, were the NSW State Award winners in the Technology & Innovation category.

The two text books were noted as having made a significant contribution to the prestressed concrete industry both in Australia and Europe.

The design of prestressed concrete structures requires a sound understanding of structural behaviour at all stages of loading and a thorough knowledge of the design criteria specified in the relevant design standard, including the rules and requirements, and the background to them.

The aim of the textbooks entitled “Design of prestressed concrete to AS3600-2009” (CRC Press, USA, 2016) and “Design of prestressed concrete to Eurocode 2” (CRC Press, USA, 2017) is to present a detailed description and explanation of the behaviour of prestressed concrete members and structures both at service loads and at ultimate loads and, in doing so, provide a comprehensive guide to structural design.

Much of the text is based on first principles and relies only on the principles of mechanics and the properties of concrete and steel, with numerous worked examples. The textbooks contain the most up-to date and recent advances in the design and research of modern prestressed concrete structures. Where the design requirements are code specific, the textbooks refer to the provisions of either the Australian or European Standards for Concrete Structures (i.e. AS3600-2009 and Eurocode 2) and the corresponding relevant loading and material Standards.

The books represent a valuable source of information and a useful guide for practitioners, researchers and students.
